About Troy Norman Coaching

At the heart of my coaching philosophy is the famous quote by Maya Angelou,

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

I believe that coaching is about creating a safe and supportive space where my clients can explore their thoughts, feelings and aspirations.

My Personal Journey with Coaching

As a young African-American athlete, I experienced firsthand the transformative power of a good coach. As a youth, I lived in the inner city but attended a school in the suburbs. While I excelled both in the classroom and on the athletic field, I was one of a handful of people that looked like me, talked like me and understood me. The more I tried to fit in, the more I seemed to lose my identity. While facing challenges and feelings of alienation, I struggled to navigate my reality and questioned my trajectory in life.

However, a teacher noticed my struggles and started coaching me on a personal and educational level. He helped me envision what my life could become with clear priorities and tangible actions. Through better self-confidence, improved self-awareness and clarity, he “coached” me toward the person I am today. I am truly grateful for that guidance and purpose.

My Beliefs with Coaching

As I entered the workforce, I recognized that people often face unique workplace and personal challenges. In fact, for those individuals from under-represented and marginalized groups, navigating the work landscape can provide a level of disequilibrium that is hard to overcome. Through coaching, I wanted to provide the support and guidance needed for everyone to overcome self-limiting behavior and take action to face those daily challenges to thrive.

With over 20 years of experience building and leading high-performing teams and coaching individuals from diverse backgrounds, I have honed the skills needed to bring out the best in people. While I hold the ACC certification from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) — a testament to my commitment to upholding the highest standards of coaching excellence —my qualification goes beyond that endorsement. With each coaching session, I bring a deep sense of empathy, active listening skills and a non-judgmental approach that translates into success.

My Goal with Coaching

I believe that coaching is a collaborative process where the client leads the way, and I serve as a trusted guide and sounding board. My goal is not to provide quick fixes or easy answers but to help my clients develop the self-awareness, self-confidence and resilience needed to achieve their dreams and goals.
